Retirement of Major Edgar Jones MAJOR EDGAR JONES, O.B.E., T.D., of Barry, former head of Barry County School and a leader of educational efforts in Wales, to-day retires from active service with the British Broadcasting Corporation in Wales during an association which has lasted from May, 1931. With the, exception of one other, he was oldest in the service of the Cardiff station. First appointed as Welsh adviser to the then director of the Welsh Region, later on retirement from his 34 years headship at Barry County School in June, 1933, he organised the new venture of broadcasts to schools in Wales. In the 1935 he was appointed secretary to the We1sh Religious Advisory council and was officially responsible for arranging broadcasts of religious services in Wales. Born in 1868 at Llanrhaiadr-yn-Mochnant, Denbighshire, Major Edgar Jones was educated at Oswestry High School and Aberystwyth University College. He is M.A. (London) in English and Ce1tic and Hon. M.A. (Wales). ‘In his ‘schooldays he was possessed of some athletic prowess, distinguishing himself in both football, cricket, tennis, rowing, end foot-racing. His first appointment was at his old school as teacher, and for five years before taking his work at Barry in 1899, he was headmaster of Llandeilo County School. He has held numerous appointments connected with educational and cultural activities.’ During the Great War he served with the Royal Engineers.
